I read this as a First Reads winner. This book is beautifully written and flows so smoothly amid great imagery and with a style that seems very much influenced by oral storytelling. I read it all in one sitting since the story is told with surprising fluidity for its actually being a mix of three interrelated stories. One thing that particularly struck me, in my reflection upon the story, was that it could, potentially, have been told as a short story. Its events were brief enough that they could [...]

Beautifully written description, "As salmon struggle upstream to the Alaskan lake of both their beginning and their end, a young physics professor brings her two children to the shore of the lake to spread their great grandmother's ashes" This sounds like The Lake of the Beginning: A Fable of Salmon, Northern Lights and An Old Promise Kept. I purchased a copy of The Lake of the Beginning and enjoyed it so much that I bought and donated a copy to our local library and kept copies to give as gifts [...]

I won this book as an ARC. This book toggles between telling you about a salmon's return to a lake in Alaska to spawn and a mother and her two children returning to the same lake to spread the the ashes of the mother's grandma. This story is beautifully written. I enjoyed the vivid imagery as well as the storyline itself. If you enjoy nature and actual storytelling I highly reccomend this book.

I read this as a First Reads winner. At first I was discouraged because the copy wasn't in book format but eventually I read it when I had nothing else to do and do not regret that choice. Beautifully written, The Old Amulet simultaneously tells three intertwined stories. It is in no way a burden to read (though I may have treated it as such after winning it) and is worth anyone's time.

The story was very touching. The images in my heard were so detailed by the way the author wrote the story. I enjoyed reading it and would recomend it to a friend
