messner starts off on a decent path, with interesting insight into the promise keepers, men's rights, etc. but definitely loses it when it comes to talking about men of color and gay liberation--not to mention pornography and sexuality when he resorts to the "sex role" analysis of patriarchy that he critiques in earlier chapters for its lack of insight into structural issues. overall, messner basically advocates "leaving manhood to join the human race."

i liked this book a lot and found it a good synopsis of the various men's movements in the US. i also liked how the author laid out how the groups interacted with or against feminist groups and thoughte book was definitely dated, though, and that was frustrating for me. overall a good introduction.
